Now that we (the Spurs) have welcomed Drew Gooden back with open arms, we're trying to sort out the options. The following are just a few questions hopefully a commissioner can help us with.
1. What is the latest date for dropping a player and having the penalty set at 50% for 2013/14, 25% for 2014/15?
2. If a waived player announces his retirement, can the penalty then be removed? Or must he be rostered to have his salary cleared?
While we're at it, a Greg Oden question too:
3. It seems reasonable that teams trading away a player signed to the MLE no longer have use of it for that year. What about a team trading a player on a 2 yr. MLE contract? Does that team have use of the MLE the following year? Specifically, Oden is on a 2 yr. contract. If he is dropped or traded before next year, would the MLE be available to me next year?
Just trying to figure out what possibilities are available. Thanks for any help on this.

Sorry to the spurs to also post a question on his post lol, but I also have a question.
I noticed in the QO rule that you wrote that it will be in place "until the end of this season". Does that mean there will be a different rule next season and the following seasons? I think it's very important to know for teams who are trading for players with QO's later in their contracts. Thank you.

No problem David. This isn't my thread.
I was just thinking it might be better to promote the habit of asking questions in a more public forum so we can all stay on the same page.
If I could add one more question (which doesn't affect me at all):
When players are dropped, its obvious that TOs and QOs are declined, but what about Player Options? Are we still responsible for a percentage of their salary if they pick up the option in real life?
Again, thanks for any help with this.

Credit where it's due, this was actually Landon's question on the chat. I've just heard different answers to it.

For my question, a commissioner told me that it will depend on if the player picks up the option or not, which is kind of confusing cause he's "cut" in this league but yeah if he picks it up in real life it counts toward cap.

Wait so if we cut a player under contract this year and with a to next year we pay the penalty for this year and the to is void, and this is exactly how PO should work.
It makes no sense if we cut a player this year and pay the penalty and then if he picks up a PO next year - it acts retroactively and now this player you cut affects you again lol...
Think that needs to be looked at for sure.

I can answer the last one already, since it's the easiest.
PO in this league are just like in real NBA. If a player in real NBA picks up his PO it's also picked up in our league.
That is valid for every situation. If the player is on our roster we keep him, if we waved the player, it counts towards our cap hits.
Its not retroactively because the cap hit is given when you drop the player for next season also.
Only if the player opts out of his contract does we "clean" that cap hit.

About Adam questions, the first one is where we are having some doubts because if we make that deadline too late (say last day of season), then we are using him for the whole season so the 75% cap this year doesn't have any effect at all...
But if we choose a date that's too soon, then someone can drop a big name with a big contract, and that will have a big influence in the playoffs since some random team will pick him up.
We will welcome any ideas on this matter...
2. Yes, the penalty is removed if/when a player retires
3. When a MLE is traded it "stops" being a MLE.
"A team can only have one player signed to the MLE. If Team A trades for a player that has the MLE in his original team, he will not carry it with the trade so his salary (5.00M) will count to the new team's Salary Cap.
A team only loses the rights to its MLE if it drops the player who has it. In this case, the MLE will only be available for next season."
So yes, when you trade your MLE to other team, you can sign another player to the MLE for next year

Regarding player drop i think the limit should be 1 weeks before playoffs. Then no free agency through playoff period.
Just and idea.

Ah, missed.
No, the rule is for the future also. I agree that the phrasing can be misleading, but that was not the idea.
This is the rule for every year...
