The decisions regarding trades are made by a Trade Committee (TC):
- It’s a 7 person group of owners who vote on trades, either to “Approve” or to “Veto”.
- Once a trade gets 3 approves or 3 vetoes it gets moved to the appropriate forum.
- If they are vetoing, a committee member should explain why so you know what is wrong with the trade and hopefully it can be rectified.
Things that can be traded:
- Players
- Draft Picks - Up to 2 years away, i.e., in the first season (2012-13) a team can trade picks up to the 2014 Draft
- Cap - A team can’t receive more than 10.00M total or trade away more than 20.00M for a season, nor can it send or acquire more than 5.00M in a single trade.
Other rules that apply are:
- Trading is open from the day of the NBA Lottery until the League’s Trade Deadline
- The League’s Trade Deadline will always be one week after the NBA’s Trade Deadline.
- It is not possible to trade Cap for future seasons. Whenever Cap is involved in a trade, that amount is reflected in the current season’s Cap only.
- The minimum value to be traded in a single “Player for Cash” trade or a single “Pick for Cash” is 0.50M, as it's the minimum value to sign a UFA.
For a trade to be voted on by the TC it has to be set up in the right way:
- Post the contract info for every player involved, including TO’s, PO’s and QO’s
- Every time a pick is involved, please specify it like the example below (Year Team Round - 2014 Team D 2nd)
- Teams must post their acceptance and an explicit explanation on the motivation behind the trade
- From the moment both teams post their acceptance of the trade and, if it is approved by the TC, the trade will be confirmed and it won’t be possible to back out, so review your trades carefully.
