Teams can release a player to the waiver wire, where he will stay for 48 hours (during the regular season) or straight to Free Agency (during the off-season). While he is on waivers, other teams may claim him, for his waived contract. The team with the highest waiver priority gets the player.
If a player is not claimed by another GM within the next 48 hours, the team that waived him has to absorb 75% of the current year salary in Cap penalty, 50% for an eventual 2nd year and 25% for the remaining years (if they exist).
Player X – 10.00M / 11.00M / 12.10M / 13.31M
Cap penalty – 7.50M / 5.5M / 3.03M / 3.30M
The player has "cleared waivers" and is treated like any UFA, able to sign with any other team.
He cannot be signed by the waiving team for the remainder of the season.
Each season's starting waiver priority is in the reverse order of the team standings from the previous season (in this first season, we use the reverse standings of the real NBA). After you win a waived player, you are placed at the bottom of the waiver priority.
The following exceptions are the only free drops allowed:
- The start of the league where any team can drop any player it wants without any kind of Cap penalty until the start of the Rookie Draft
- Every year, the Post-Draft Period where a team can drop players with a maximum of 3.00M remaining in their contracts only to make room for its signed draft picks
- When a new GM takes over a team, he can drop 1 player from his roster without any cap hit in the first 48 hours. That player cannot be signed back or traded to that team until next offseason.
- If a player retires, he can be dropped anytime without any cap penalty
- For Rookies, as long as a team does not officially sign them, they can be dropped anytime with no penalty (deadline is the day before the start of NBA)
Conditional drops are possible, but only for trading purposes:
- They need to be posted both in the trade post and on “Player Dismissal”, with the information about being conditional pending approval of trade and with the link to that trade.
- It is not possible to bid on a FA when you have a full roster. You need to drop a player first, and then bid on the FA.
