First of all lets look at the playoff tiebreakers:
In the event two or more teams are tied in the standings, a series of tiebreakers are applied to determine which team receives the higher seeding.
Two-Team Tiebreaker:
1. Division winner (this criterion is applied regardless of whether the tied teams are in the same division)
2. Better record in head-to-head games
3. Higher winning percentage within division (if teams are in the same division)
4. Higher winning percentage in conference games
5. Higher winning percentage against playoff teams in own conference
6. Higher winning percentage against playoff teams in opposite conference
7. Higher point differential between points scored and points allowed
Three-Team Tiebreaker:
1. Division winner (this criterion is applied regardless of whether the tied teams are in the same division)
2. Best head-to-head winning percentage among all teams tied
3. Highest winning percentage within division (if teams are in the same division)
4. Highest winning percentage in conference games
5. Highest winning percentage against playoff teams in own conference
6. Highest point differential between points scored and points allowed
In the west there were 2 ties with playoff implications.
DEN-MIN for the #2
LAL-OKC for the #5
DEN-MIN went to Tiebreaker number 7. Higher point differential between points scored and points allowed
Since in this league what makes a team win or lose a game/matchup is cats won/lost we use that count for the equivalent of "differential between points scored and points allowed"
Denver finished with a record of 127-35-0
Minny finished with a record of 115-45-2
So, Denver is #2 and Minny #3
LAL-OKC was decided by the Tiebreaker number 4. Higher winning percentage in conference games
LAL finished 13-5 against their own conference for a pct of .722
OKC finished 4-4 against their own conference for a pct of .500
Final Playoff Ranks for the Western Conference:
# 1 Golden State Warriors
# 2 Denver Nuggets
# 3 Minnesotta Timberwolves
# 4 Houston Rockets
# 5 Los Angeles Lakers
# 6 Oklahoma City Thunder
# 7 San Antonio Spurs
# 8 Los Angeles Clippers
In the East there were 3 ties with playoff implications.
IND-CHA for the #1
BOS-MIL for the #3
NYK-CHI-BRO for the #8
IND-CHA went to Tiebreaker number 7. Higher point differential between points scored and points allowed
Again, since in this league what makes a team win or lose a game/matchup is cats won/lost we use that count for the equivalent of "differential between points scored and points allowed"
Indiana finished with a record of 116-43-3
Charlotte finished with a record of 111-50-1
So, IND is #1 and CHA is #2
BOS-MIL was decided by the Tiebreaker number 4. Higher winning percentage in conference games
BOS finished 8-0 against their own conference for a pct of 1.000
MIL finished 12-6 against their own conference for a pct of .667
So, BOS is #3 and MIL is #4
NYK-CHI-BRO was a bit more tricky.
But the League Commissioners have decided to insert a new tiebreaker, above all the others, and it was Ownership. Since Brooklyn doesn't have an owner at the moment, that was the first step in selecting the 8th Seed.
In this case, the results are the same, since BRO had the lowest pct of wins inside their conference, but this way we have a rule for the future. A team without an owner automatically loses every tiebreaker they're in.
With that exclusion, it was a tie between NYK and BRO and it all went down to Tiebreaker number 4. Higher winning percentage in conference games
NYK finished 5-3 against their own conference for a pct of .625
CHI finished 7-11 against their own conference for a pct of .389
So NYK is #8 and CHI is out of the playoffs.
Final Playoff Ranks for the Eastern Conference:
# 1 Indiana Pacers
# 2 Charlotte Bobcats
# 3 Boston Celtics
# 4 Milwaukee Bucks
# 5 Orlando Magic
# 6 Atlanta Hawks
# 7 Miami Heat
# 8 New York Knicks
